What is Operational TP and how does it work?

Operational TP is more than calculating transfer prices on SKU level using spreadsheets and then maintaining them in condition records in SAP; it is about global tax and compliance and intercompany pricing processes as well as results must be in line with your group’s TP policy. 

Regular profitability checks by segmenting a legal entity’s profit and loss statements by transaction group, transaction partner, and TP function to test them against benchmarks is just the entry point. Complex conversion rules are required to enrich millions of ERP records with TP-specific attributes, plus multi-level cost allocations. Calculating and updating transfer prices at the product level brings more complexity, as TP methods such as TNMM, R- or C+ need to be applied. Finally, forecast and customs duties data for simulations are the basis to obtain optimal transfer prices during the year, avoiding year-end adjustments. And there is even more!

SAP ERP systems, even the new S/4HANA, do not deliver such very specific OTP functionalities. Once this fact is known to the key decision makers, you have the options to continue with manual spreadsheets, to develop an own solution or to buy a professional OTP software. In certain cases, TP experts have been advised externally and do consider now building their own OTP applications using standard modelling or platform technology software or low code workflow applications.
